Appraisal Clause

Has Your Vehicle Been in an Accident?

If insurance is not wanting to pay for the repairs needed you may be able to invoke the appraisal clause.

If you find yourself in a situation where the repair order from your chosen auto body shop exceeds the amount that your insurance carrier is willing to cover, you may consider invoking the appraisal clause.

The “appraisal clause” or “RTA” serves as a mechanism for customers to resolve disputes regarding the amount owed by
the insurer for a loss, without resorting to legal proceedings. As the policyholder, if you have reached an impasse, you have the authority to invoke the appraisal clause.

It is important to note that your collision repair center cannot initiate this process on your behalf, as you are the party holding the contract with your insurance
company.

Please be aware that an appraisal clause is a provision commonly included in insurance policies, although it may not be present in all policies. Typically, you can find the appraisal clause in the “Damage to Your Auto” section of your policy. To determine if this option is available in your policy, the most convenient course of action is to request a copy of your FULL policy via email and forward it to an independent appraiser. They will examine the policy and confirm if the appraisal clause is applicable.

Here’s how the process works:

Once the appraisal clause is invoked, both you and your insurance company will engage separate appraisers who will conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine the appropriate amount required to properly repair the vehicle. The appraisers chosen by each side will then mutually agree on a third appraiser, who will serve as an impartial umpire. The umpire will review and evaluate the submissions of both appraisers. Once two of the three appraisers reach an agreement on the correct cost for the necessary repairs, that determined amount becomes binding.

The objective of an independent appraiser is to advocate for your rightful compensation, ensuring that your vehicle is repaired in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications to guarantee your utmost safety, optimal vehicle performance, and the preservation of its highest possible value.

Ask your trusted collision repair facility if they have an independent appraiser they work with.
